Frequently asked questions
What resolution are your images from 35mm film?
Scan sizes and file types (35mm)
Medium JPEG
3,130 × 2,175 px
Typical file size: ~5 MB per image
A great everyday option for sharing online and general use. Medium scans are typically sufficient for prints up to 12 × 8 inches (depending on the image and how closely you view the print).
High JPEG (recommended)
6,744 × 4,492 px
Typical file size: ~20 MB per image
Our High scans extract the maximum detail from 35mm film, with smoother tonal transitions and finer texture. If you plan to print larger, crop, or simply want the best-looking files with minimal fuss, this is the option we recommend.
High 16-bit TIFF (Pro)
6,744 × 4,492 px
Typical file size: ~90 MB per image
Our Noritsu HS-1800 produces true 16-bit TIFF files for maximum editing headroom. This is ideal if you plan to do heavier colour grading, refine skin tones, recover highlights/shadows, or make subtle tonal adjustments without the file “breaking apart”.
(For most customers, High JPEG is already excellent — TIFF Pro is for those who want maximum flexibility in post.)
What resolution are your images from 120 film?
Scan sizes and file types (120 / medium format)
(Dimensions below are based on a 6×7 negative.)
Medium JPEG
3,149 × 2,514 px
Typical file size: ~6 MB per image
Ideal for web use and everyday sharing. Medium scans are typically sufficient for prints up to 12 × 10 inches (depending on the image and viewing distance).
High JPEG (recommended)
6,298 × 5,028 px
Typical file size: ~25 MB per image
Our High scans capture the full look of medium format with excellent detail and smooth tonal transitions. This is our recommended option for most customers, and is suitable for prints up to around 20 × 18 inches (and often larger depending on the image).
High 16-bit TIFF (Pro)
6,298 × 5,028 px
Typical file size: ~92 MB per image
True 16-bit TIFF files from our Noritsu HS-1800, giving maximum editing headroom for colour grading and heavier adjustments. Best for photographers who intend to edit more deeply, or want an archival master file.
